To fully enjoy HIGHLANDER, we strongly advise you to prepare physically beforehand. During your physical preparations, don't forget to test the gear also.

Expect fickle and changeable weather. Bring both dry weather and rain clothing, including a cap or hat, gloves, cold-weather long-sleeve t-shirt (preferably wool), hiking trousers as well as rain trousers and a rain jacket.

Backpack checklist

BACKPACK

The backpack you will be carrying will likely be heavy. Practice with a 5-7 kg and increase gradually to 15-17 kg.

The backpack you will be carrying will likely be heavy. Practice with a 5-7 kg and increase gradually to 15-17 kg.  

Make sure you can walk comfortably in your backpacking shoes and break them in before the event.

Look into ultralight backpacking and thru-hiking methods of walking and packing. Bring only the indispensable items in your backpack and choose natural materials wherever possible.

A fully packed backpack, excluding food and water, should not weigh over 16 kg.

Weather

Expect fog, rain, and cold in the morning and over 25°C weather during the day. Bring well-made and durable all-weather hiking clothing suitable for layering.

Food

For reheating food, you will need LPG or alcohol/gasoline.

Navigation

To find your way around, you must know how to read maps (which will be provided by the Organizer) and use a compass.

Safety

For your safety, all participants must bring a first aid kit.

Littering

We believe our participants love and cherish nature and all its beauty. We know you wouldn’t litter, so please bring a waste bag for your litter.

Littering on and around trails, checkpoints, and mountain lodges are forbidden. Litterers will be disqualified and banned from applying to any future HIGHLANDER events.

Dogs

Dogs are welcome but must always stay on a leash.

Before TRAVELING

Before you set off on your journey in Montenegro, do some research about Žabljak, the city where you will be staying. The city center is only 2.5km from the Black Lake. There is a gas station in the center and shops, markets in town for all your needs.

ARRIVING BY PLANE

In case you are arriving by plane - the distances from nearest airports to Žabljak are:

  • Podgorica 133 km
  • Tivat 170 km
  • Sarajevo 162 km
  • Dubrovnik 189 km
  • Belgrade 377 km.

ARRIVING BY CAR

If you are arriving by car, we recommend leaving it in Žabljak, there is enough parking space in the center. 

GETTING AROUND

For all tours it is best to have your own car, rent a bicycle or choose a walking tour of National park Durmitor.

TRANSPORT TO THE CHECK-IN AND START

From Žabljak you can easily find Black Lake, by taxi or by foot - since it's only a 2.5km walk. 

If you prefer to make your own transportation arrangements to reach Black Lake, you can use GPS - it will take you straight to the starting point. Keep in mind that parking space is limited.
