TrailWise episode 4: Debunking common hiking myths

News cover image

In the latest episode of TrailWise, we're busting some of the most common myths that can turn a great hike into a tough day on the trail. Whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned trekker, falling for these misconceptions can affect your experience, comfort, and safety.

Myth #1: "You don’t need to train for hiking - it’s just walking."

While it’s true that hiking doesn’t require Olympic-level training, a bit of preparation goes a long way. The more you train, the more you'll enjoy the trail. Simulate hiking movements with lunges, step-ups, and loaded walks to get your body trail-ready.

Myth #2: "If it’s sunny, you don’t need a jacket."

Think again. Mountain weather is unpredictable, and sunshine can quickly turn into a storm. Always pack a lightweight, waterproof layer, you’ll thank yourself later.

Myth #3: "You don’t need that much water."

Hydration is key. Even on cooler days, you should carry at least three liters of water. On hot or high-exertion days, electrolytes and frequent sips are essential to avoid fatigue and cramping.

Myth #4: "The more gear, the better."

Not quite. Overpacking adds unnecessary weight, putting strain on your legs and back. Bring what you need and nothing more. Smart packing equals happy hiking.

Myth #5: "Cotton clothes are fine for hiking."

Cotton holds moisture, which can lead to chafing, discomfort, and even hypothermia in cold weather. Stick to moisture-wicking, quick-drying fabrics designed for outdoor activity.

The takeaway? Hiking is simple, but preparation matters. Avoiding these common mistakes will keep your adventure smooth, safe, and enjoyable.

Watch Episode 4 of TrailWise and level up your hiking know-how. Because when you know better, you hike better.
